Saint Valentine's Day History

Saint Valentine's Day is a very special celebration all over the world. Mostly, it is celebrated by people who are in love (spouses, boyfriends and girlfriends, a platonic love, people who want to show their affection to a special someone and more). It is not dedicated only to lovers, friendship is also rewarded, but, how did it all started?, why do call it Saint Valentine's Day?

Historically I has many meanings, one of them is significant to Christians. There are also more romantic stories like is Chaucer's, an English poet. He made a poem dedicated to th commitment between King Richard II of England and Anne of Bohemia. They got married when he was around 13 or 14 and she was 14. 'For this was on seynt Volantynys day Whan euery bryd comyth there to chese his make'.

Eventhough many readers think that Chaucer is referring to February 14 others believe that it's wrong because of data that confirms that he is referring to May 2, saints day for Valentine of Genoa. Another legendary story tells the story of saint Valentine, who was persecuted due to his Christian beliefs.

The origins of the celebration is around XIV century in the United Kingdom on February 14. Since the XIX century in England, the exchange of cards produced massively started. Besides cards, there were gifts like roses and chocolates, mainly the men gave them to women. In America, this celebration was associated as well with a greeting 'Happy Valentine's' to a platonic love sent by men to women.

Common gifts for this day are, roses, chocolates, teddy bears, greeting cards and others...

This is a special day that you can not only spend with a lover but with your friends and family. There are many ecards and greeting cards related to this special day created so that you can find the one that expresses the message you want to send.

Have a Happy Valentine's!
